Sutton United have signed defender Bobby Amartey on a short-term loan from Leicester City. The 20-year-old Ghana youth international arrives to add talent and depth to a backline that has helped the club to sixth place in the National League.

Manager Chris Agutter welcomed the versatile, athletic centre-back, who will wear the number 26 shirt. "Very happy to welcome Bobby to the Club, a massive thank you also to Leicester City for trusting us with a players development who we know they rate so highly," Agutter said. He also thanked Leicester's Steve Morison and Russell Martin for their support in the process.

Amartey is a product of Leicester's academy, having joined at Under-13 level. He captained their Under-21 side, made his senior debut in the EFL Trophy last season, and has trained with the Foxes' first team this term. He is also the second cousin of former Leicester midfielder Daniel Amartey.

Defensive reinforcement

The signing offers a boost to a Sutton defence that has the second-best record in the division, conceding just six goals in six league games. The team's form has been mixed lately, with two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five outings, leaving them on 12 points.

Agutter highlighted the qualities Amartey will bring. "Bobby is a big, tall and athletic centre back who enjoys defending, wants to put his head on the ball, wants to block shots, wants to track runners, and is desperate for clean sheets, he’ll fit right in," the manager stated.

The defender has already played at the Borough Sports Ground, featuring for Leicester's Under-21s in a National League Cup tie last month. His loan deal is a short-term arrangement as Sutton look to maintain their strong start to the campaign. The club's full squad list is available online.
