Sutton United's next opponents, Harrogate Town, extended their winning run with a 1-0 victory at Woking on Saturday. The result keeps Harrogate second in the National League standings, setting up a tough test for Sutton when they travel there on 24 October.
Ellis Taylor scored the only goal in the 32nd minute, finishing with his left foot after a pass from Ethan Bristow. It was the 23-year-old's second goal of the season and his first from a start, having featured as a substitute in the previous six matches. Manager Simon Weaver was delighted with the defensive effort that delivered a third consecutive clean sheet. "I think that the habits of winning teams are always built on clean sheets and being able to win in different ways," he told reporters. Weaver also praised Taylor's influence, saying he had been scoring in training all week and is a popular figure in the dressing room.
Harrogate's win was hard-earned against a Woking side that had scored ten goals in its previous three games. Goalkeeper Luke Hutchinson made an acrobatic save to deny John Marquis and preserve the lead, which survived a late miscued header from Taylan Harris that looped over the bar. The victory is Harrogate's fourth league win in a row, their best such run since January 2020 when they were in the fifth tier. They now sit seven points behind leaders Boreham Wood and one point ahead of Southend United, with their full squad contributing to this strong form.
Sutton United, who are 13th with 18 points from 13 games, face a significant challenge. Their recent form reads LDLDD, with a 2-0 home defeat to Boreham Wood in their last outing.
